Paralegals in Ontario are permitted to represent clients in certain family law matters before the Ontario Court of Justice, particularly in less complex cases. Our goal is to make legal services more accessible by guiding you through procedures, explaining your options, and ensuring your rights are protected. How We Can Help You in Family Law We can assist you with: Child Support & Spousal Support (Simple Cases) Helping you prepare and file applications for support, motions to change existing orders, and responding to claims. Parenting Time & Decision-Making Responsibility (Custody & Access) Assisting with straightforward parenting arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and guiding you through court processes when disputes arise. Uncontested Divorce Support While only lawyers can file and complete divorce applications, we can assist by preparing your paperwork, explaining the steps, and connecting you with the appropriate resources if your case requires a lawyer. Court Forms & Document Preparation Preparing and organizing court forms such as Applications, Answers, Financial Statements, and Motions to Change, ensuring accuracy and compliance with court requirements. Representation in the Ontario Court of Justice (OCJ) Paralegals are authorized to appear in family law matters at the OCJ, particularly in cases that do not involve complex property division. Mediation & Settlement Support Guiding you through negotiation, preparing documents for mediation, and helping you pursue practical solutions outside the courtroom. What We Cannot Do It is important for clients to know that paralegals cannot represent you in complex family law matters that involve: Property division (equalization of net family property) Divorce applications (full representation, this must be handled by a lawyer) Matters before the Superior Court of Justice In those cases, we can still assist with paperwork and provide referrals to trusted lawyers when your matter requires representation outside a paralegal’s scope.
